FAQ drafted from your visitor information

Is entry free?

The Art Park and outdoor spaces are free. M+, the Hong Kong Palace Museum and most performances are ticketed — day passes and bundle tickets are available.

Suggest an edit
How long does a visit take?

Most visitors spend half a day: two to three hours for one museum plus the waterfront. A full day covers two venues comfortably.

Suggest an edit
Can I bring food?

Picnics are welcome on the Art Park lawn, and restaurants and food trucks operate across the district.

Suggest an edit
Is it suitable for kids?

Yes — open lawns, family programmes at Freespace, and both museums run family trails and workshops.

About Tai Kwun

Situated on the site of the former Central Police Station compound, Tai Kwun comprises three declared monuments: the Police Station, Central Magistracy, and Victoria Prison. This expansive heritage site allows visitors to explore Hong Kong's law and order history through beautifully restored colonial architecture and interactive historical displays. Standing in striking contrast to the brick heritage buildings is JC Contemporary, a modern architectural marvel designed by Herzog & de Meuron that hosts dynamic contemporary art exhibitions. Together, the heritage and arts programming foster a unique dialogue between the city's past and its creative future.

FAQ drafted from your visitor information

Is any part of M+ free?

Yes — the Ground Floor, B1 level and the Roof Garden are free. Standard admission covers the main galleries; special exhibitions are ticketed separately.

Edit
How long does a visit take?

Two to three hours covers the main galleries comfortably; add an hour for a special exhibition or the Roof Garden at sunset.

Edit
Can I take photos?

Personal, non-commercial photography is welcome in most galleries — no flash or tripods. Some loaned works are marked no-photo.

Edit
Is it good for kids?

Yes — family trails, workshops and plenty of open space; strollers are welcome throughout.

Meow — hello! I'm Metti, your museum cat, and today we have something special: not one museum, but a whole district. West Kowloon rises on forty hectares of land reclaimed from Victoria Harbour — a park, two world-class museums, and stages for every kind of performance, all within a gentle stroll. Here is our day: a morning walk through the Art Park and its open-air art, late morning inside M+, lunch by the water at Freespace, an afternoon among treasures at the Hong Kong Palace Museum, and at dusk, the glowing curtain of the Xiqu Centre. Comfortable shoes? Then follow my tail.

Script

We begin on the Great Lawn — Hong Kong's favourite picnic blanket. Ahead of you, the full sweep of Victoria Harbour and the island skyline: one of the finest views in the city, and it is completely free. The waterfront promenade runs the whole length of the district; joggers pass, kites climb, and on weekends the lawn fills with families and festival tents. Notice how the park is designed to slow you down — winding paths, wide skies, and always the water at your side. Cities rarely give their best real estate to grass and art. This one did.

Art in the open air

Morning · Art Park · Story 3 of 14

Narration

0:40English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

The Art Park doubles as an outdoor gallery. Large-scale sculptures and installations rotate through the lawns, curated by M+ just across the road — so the park changes with every visit. Look also for the M+ Pavilion, a small exhibition building wrapped in reflective panels; on a clear day it almost vanishes, mirroring grass and harbour back at you. My advice for outdoor art: circle it. Sculpture placed under an open sky is made to be walked around, sat beside, and seen with the skyline behind it. And yes — you may picnic next to a masterpiece here. I checked.

The M+ Facade — art across the harbour

Morning · Art Park · Story 4 of 14

Script

Now turn toward M+ and look up. The tower's harbour-facing side is one of the world's great media facades — a vast grid of LEDs that switches on after dark and turns the building itself into a public artwork. M+ commissions artists to make moving-image works especially for this screen, so what plays tonight may be gone next season. The best seats are right here on the promenade — or across the water on Hong Kong Island, where the facade joins the skyline's evening light show. A museum that broadcasts art to the whole harbour: that is West Kowloon's spirit in a single gesture.

Script

Here it is: M+, Asia's first global museum of contemporary visual culture, opened in 2021. The Swiss architects Herzog and de Meuron gave it the shape of an upside-down letter T — a broad podium holding the galleries, and a slim tower rising above. The building literally straddles the Airport Express rail tunnels; rather than hide them, the architects carved out the dramatic sunken Found Space around them. Inside you'll find visual art, design and architecture, and moving image — from Hong Kong, Asia, and beyond. Give it a couple of hours. I'll point you to three shows worth your morning.

Janet Cardiff: The Forty Part Motet

Late morning · M+ · Story 6 of 14

In review

Narration

0:44English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

My first recommendation is a room you listen to. Janet Cardiff's The Forty Part Motet reimagines a sixteenth-century choral work — Spem in alium, by Thomas Tallis — through forty loudspeakers arranged in an oval, one for each individually recorded voice of the Salisbury Cathedral Choir. Walk the ring and you hear single voices, close as a whisper. Stand at the centre and they gather into a full choir around you. Cardiff wanted us to hear music the way a singer inside it does. Most visitors stay for one cycle of the piece. Stay for two.

Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now

Script

Next, a whole career in one sweep: the South Korean artist Lee Bul, from 1998 to now. The exhibition opens with an immersive landscape of large architectural installations from her Mon grand récit series — meditations on modernism's grand ideas and its failed utopias. Then come the celebrated Cyborg and Anagram series that made her name around the world, tangling art history, critical theory and science fiction into questions of gender, beauty, and the technological body. The final room feels like her studio: drawings, sketches, maquettes. If you see one artist survey this year, make it this one.

Nakagin and Kiyotomo — two Tokyo interiors

Late morning · M+ · Story 8 of 14

Narration

0:46English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Before you leave M+, visit Tokyo. Two legendary spaces, once ten minutes apart in that city, are reunited here. First, a living capsule from Kurokawa Kisho's Nakagin Capsule Tower — the Metabolist dream of plug-in, replaceable homes for busy city workers. Beside it, Kuramata Shiro's Kiyotomo sushi bar, an austere facade hiding a warm, theatrical interior of cold granite and soft cedar. Both served the optimistic Tokyo of the late nineteen-eighties. The sushi bar survives intact because M+ preserved the entire interior; the capsule is one of very few saved anywhere. Small rooms — enormous ideas.

Script

Time to refuel. Freespace, the low dark building beside the lawn, is the district's home for contemporary performance. Its centrepiece, The Box, is Hong Kong's largest black-box theatre, and the programme runs from jazz to experimental dance. By day, grab coffee and a bite at the harbourside livehouse, and check the posters for tonight's gigs. My tip: carry your lunch out to the lawn. Somewhere between the sandwich and the skyline, you'll understand why Hong Kongers guard this park so fiercely.

Script

Our afternoon anchor sits near the district's western tip: the Hong Kong Palace Museum, opened in 2022. The architect Rocco Yim shaped it like a golden vessel, its curved metal facade catching the harbour light. Inside, more than nine hundred treasures from Beijing's Palace Museum — many never before shown outside the Forbidden City — rotate through nine galleries, alongside Hong Kong's own collecting stories. Look up as you move between floors: the atrium ceilings nod to the layered gates of the Forbidden City, and the great windows keep pulling the harbour back into view.

Ancient Egypt Unveiled

Narration

0:34English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

My first pick here leaves China entirely. Ancient Egypt Unveiled gathers two hundred and fifty treasures from Egypt's great museums — a collaboration with Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities — to tell nearly five thousand years of civilisation along the Nile. Statues, sarcophagi, gold. And keep an eye out for the feline goddess Bastet — the Egyptians worshipped cats, you know. I try to be gracious about it. Give this show a full hour; the crowds are real, and so is the awe.

Script

Then, porcelain at its peak. Brilliance presents more than one hundred Ming-dynasty ceramic treasures from the Palace Museum's imperial holdings — nearly three centuries of kilns chasing perfection in form, glaze, and design, from 1368 to 1644. The galleries move through the early, middle, and late Ming, and you can watch taste itself evolve: confident early blue-and-white, experimental mid-period glazes, refined late wares. Stand close to the blue-and-white and look for the painter's hand — no two brushstrokes are alike.

Script

One more landmark before sunset. At the district's eastern gate stands the Xiqu Centre, opened in 2019 and devoted to Chinese opera. Revery Architecture and Ronald Lu shaped its shimmering facade like a stage curtain gently parted, with a giant moon gate for a door. Step inside: the Grand Theatre is lifted high above the ground, leaving an open, breezy atrium below where anyone may wander. If you can, book the Tea House Theatre experience — a ninety-minute taster of Cantonese opera with tea and dim sum, made for newcomers. Cantonese opera joined UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list in 2009. Here, it has a future as well as a past.

And here we are, back at the water as the sky turns gold. Look east: the Xiqu Centre glows like a lantern. Look west: the Palace Museum catches the last light. And above us, the M+ facade flickers on, sending tonight's artwork out across the harbour. One day, one district: a park that collects sculptures, a museum that collects the present, a palace that collects the past, and stages that collect voices. Thank you for wandering with me. I'm Metti — and West Kowloon and I hope to see you again soon. Meow.

Shanshui: Echoes and Signals

M+ · Story 1 of 6

Published

Narration

1:33English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

This exhibition, Shanshui: Echoes and Signals, explores the deep relationship between landscape and humanity. It connects our post-industrial and increasingly virtual world to a profound cultural legacy.

Shanshui, or mountain and water, represents a millennium-old East Asian tradition. It encompasses ink painting and philosophical thinking.

But shanshui is more than just observable reality. This show seeks invisible resonances between stillness and motion, vision and imagination. You will see shanshui reimagined through diverse contemporary mediums. Look for sculpture, moving image, sound, and design.

Exceptional ink paintings by artists like Yang Jiechang and Xu Bing show formal experiments. Discover a new kind of landscape in Tatsuo Miyajima's iconic LED installation. Also, find electronics from the M+ Design collection. Highlights include a kinetic installation by Xu Zhongmin. Don't miss the sculpture garden with Isamu Noguchi's works, activated by Vivian Wong's sound. Step inside to explore how ancient ideas echo across our modern signals.

Script

This exhibition, Heri Dono and Wael Shawky: Chorus, brings two powerful voices to M+. It explores how civilizations connect and evolve. Both artists use old traditions, myths, folk tales, storytelling, and theater to reflect on our past. They also invite us to imagine new futures beyond economic growth.

Wael Shawky's video, I Am Hymns of the New Temples, takes us to ancient Pompeii. Actors in handmade masks explore humanity's beginnings. They reinterpret creation myths. Shawky examines how these stories shape national identity.

Heri Dono's installation, Fermentation of the Mind, looks like a classroom. Fiberglass heads nod and chant when activated. It critiques propaganda and state influence in Indonesia. He uses Javanese shadow puppetry as satire. These works offer deep reflections on history and society. Prepare to think differently about the stories we tell.

Beyond China, silk was precious as gold. It even served as currency, driving trade along the famous Silk Roads. Silk also made unique contributions to art. It became a canvas for paintings and luxurious fabric. This survey showcases over 100 spectacular textiles. They span from the Neolithic period up to the early 20th century. The walk · Story 8 of 8

Published

Narration

0:23English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

That's the walk. A quay, a lawn, sculptures that come and go, a building made of mirrors, and a museum that becomes a screen. West Kowloon is young — the best time to know a place is while it's still becoming itself. Come back in a season; the park will have rearranged its art for you. Meow.

Welcome to the Xiqu Centre Intro

The building · Story 1 of 10

In review

Narration

0:25English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Meow — welcome to the Xiqu Centre, West Kowloon's eastern gate and Hong Kong's home for Chinese opera. Xiqu simply means traditional Chinese theatre — an art of song, speech, acrobatics, and painted faces. This guide walks you through the building first, then behind the curtain of the art form itself.

A curtain, parted

The building · Story 2 of 10

In review

Narration

0:24English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Step back and look at the facade: thousands of shimmering panels sweep upward like a stage curtain caught mid-parting. The architects — Revery Architecture with Ronald Lu and Partners — wanted the building itself to perform an opening act. By night, the curtain glows from within, and the whole centre becomes a lantern at the district's edge.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

Through the moon gate

The building · Story 3 of 10

In review

Narration

0:22English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

You enter through a giant circular opening — a moon gate, borrowed from classical Chinese gardens, where round doorways mark the passage into somewhere gentler. Here it marks the passage from traffic to theatre. Pause under the arch: you're standing in the building's signature photograph.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

The floating theatre

The building · Story 4 of 10

In review

Narration

0:24English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Now look up. The Grand Theatre — more than a thousand seats — floats high above your head. Lifting the auditorium into the air did two clever things at once: it freed the ground floor to become an open civic space, and it lifted the stage away from the rumble of the trains below. Engineering, in service of silence.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

The atrium — a covered plaza

The building · Story 5 of 10

In review

Narration

0:22English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Because the theatre floats, the ground level is yours. This atrium is a covered plaza — free to enter, open late, with exhibitions, seating, and breezes drifting through. Opera houses are usually locked boxes that open for ticket holders. This one starts by inviting the whole city in.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

The Tea House Theatre

The building · Story 6 of 10

In review

Narration

0:22English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

The Tea House Theatre is the small hall made for first meetings with Cantonese opera: around two hundred seats, tea and dim sum at your table, and a narrated ninety-minute programme of excerpts performed by the resident Tea House Rising Stars Troupe. It is the gentlest possible introduction — and honestly, my favourite room in the building.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

Water sleeves & painted faces

Behind the curtain · Story 7 of 10

In review

Narration

0:27English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

A word about what you'll see on stage. Every gesture in xiqu is a code: a circled walk means a long journey; a lifted foot, a doorstep. Watch for the water sleeves — long white silk extensions that performers flick and swirl to paint emotion in the air. And the painted faces? Colour is character: red for loyalty, white for cunning.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

Gongs and strings

Behind the curtain · Story 8 of 10

In review

Narration

0:21English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Close your eyes in a Cantonese opera and you can still follow the story. The percussion leads — gongs and woodblocks punctuate every entrance, every glance. Around them, bowed strings and plucked lutes carry the melodies. The orchestra doesn't accompany the actors; it converses with them.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

A living heritage

Behind the curtain · Story 9 of 10

In review

Narration

0:30English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

Cantonese opera carries centuries of tradition, and since 2009 it holds a place on the world list of living heritage. The Xiqu Centre treats that as a starting point, not a trophy: young artists train here, step into their first major roles here, and meet their first audiences here. An art form stays alive the same way it always has — by being performed.

← Xiqu Centre: Architecture & Backstage

Take a bow Ending

Behind the curtain · Story 10 of 10

In review

Narration

0:20English · Metti voiceOther languages are minted automatically on publish

Script

That's the Xiqu Centre: a curtain for a facade, a moon gate for a door, a theatre in the air, and a four-hundred-year-old art form learning new steps. Catch a tea house session if you can — and when the performers take their bow, now you'll know exactly what it took. Meow.
